This year for South by Southwest I won tickets to Perez Hilton's "One Night in Austin" which featured some interesting bands that I hadn't heard before. Mr. Perez is a big fan of the punky beat type rock, almost having a little of an 80's vibe, so the music was right up my alley. Perez would introduce each act himself, having hand picked some of his current indie faves.
I really enjoyed myself...except I felt old. Really, really old. Most of the people at the venue that night (most--we did have some older comrades) were in their 20's or college aged. My friends and I were so amused by the conversations going on around us beginning with the long line to get in. We quickly realized that we were OLD! Regardless of our age, though, we had fun. What's not to like about free concerts in Austin's newest ACL live venue with friends? It was a blast!
The only thing that just made this mama's heart sad was the band, The Pretty Reckless. It is led by singer Taylor Momsen who played Jenny or "Little J" on Gossip Girl. Taylor kept coming outside while we all waited in line waving and talking to the crowd. She seemed nice, but she also was so very young. I tried not to go all judgmental on her, BUT where were her parents? She's 17. Again, did I mention I felt really old? Well this is part of the reason why--instead of enjoying what was really a good voice on this girl, I just wanted to jump on stage, put some clothes on her and yell at her parents. The Mama side really came out in me, so I found her set hard to watch. The girl's got some serious talent. Too bad she's wasting it on singing about lyrics that are ridiculously inappropriate for her age and wearing next to nothing. Did you hear me say she's 17?! It was a travesty!
Back to fun stuff, the night was fun...and an experience. I realized that while I might be old to this hip, music loving crowd, I still love music of all kinds! Just not by 17-year-olds in negligees! ;-)
